The days
of the Steam Engine ended in the early sixties. Sadly most steam trains
were replaced by diesel and electric trains and locomotives. Most of
the steam trains disappeared or fell into disrepair. Fortunately there
are still enough Steam Engine enthusiast's around to preserve and restore
the trains and keep a handful of the scenic routes open.
Many of the famous steam trains have now been restored and preserved
at the National Railway Museum in York. Many people have nostalgic feelings
about Steam trains. They like to tell children and grand children about
the days they used to stand on the top of bridges and try to drop pennies
into the funnel and other such stories. Others just reminiss as they
peer out of carriage windows, with smoke and ash billowing above, the
engine driver 'tooting' on his distinctive horn as the train train moves
along the track.
