Things to do in Liverpool and Merseyside

Merseyside has a rich industrial heritage and has been a centre for world trade for many years. In the past Liverpool was at the heart of the cotton and slave trade and much of it's early wealth was created from this trade. More recently Liverpool has re-invented itself. Recent developments have seen extensive investment in projects suct as Liverpool One - a fabulous makeover for Liverpool city centre. Liverpool is a great place to visit as there are many quality attractions. The area has fantastic buildings, Racecourses, a number of large parks, extensive beaches and nature reserves and a vibrant social scene. Liverpool is one of the few ports in the world where cruise liners such as the QE2 are able to dock in the heart of the city. Plenty to see and do for all ages.

Liverpool One is Liverpool's new shopping centre and was designed to bridge the gap between the Albert Dock area and the existing Church Street shopping area.

Formby Beach & Nature reserve is one of Merseyside's hidden gems. The Sefton Coast is the largest sand dune system in England. The golden sandy beach stretches from Formby to Southport and is backed by sand dunes and woodland. Erosion of sand on the beach at Formby is revealing layers of mud and sediment, laid down and covered in the late Neolithic/early Bronze Age, approximately 3,500 - 4,000 years ago. These sediments often contain the footprints of humans and animals (most commonly aurochs) from that period.
The Cavern Club - Matthew St, Liverpool is a rock and roll club in Liverpool where Brian Epstein first saw The Beatles performing on 9 November 1961. The Cavern Club is still open as one of the UK's most famous venues and has around 40 live bands performing every week. The front room of the Cavern is the main tourist attraction, where people come to have their photograph taken on the famous Cavern stage, with the names of the bands who played there written on the back wall.
