Try to establish
a routine for your job search. Don't just blitz
employers with your CV hoping to get an interview, try targeting
companies instead. Preparation is the key to success in most
successful job search campaigns. Past experience suggests
that for every 10 quality applications you can
typically expect 1 interview. Unfortunately, even using
the best techniques this will not guarantee a quick result.
However, it is
important to try and remain motivated throughout your job
search even though you will have set backs.
Remember the following:
a good CV will double
your chances of an interview
any speculative approaches
you make should ask for an opportunity to discuss
possibilities
LI> 80% of jobs are never advertised, you need
to approach companies to find them
if you contact a
company be prepared before you call them
match your
skills to the job
CV
The purpose of your CV is to get you an Interview.
You want to make you CV interesting to others and strongly represent
you. Make sure it is short, punchy and highlights your strengths
and skills. It helps to have one major CV that has ALL the information.
When applying for a job, edit the major CV by 'cutting and pasting'
to create a much smaller version that is targeted to the vacancy you
are applying for. Your CV should be two pages or less.
Cover Letters
A customised, one page cover letter
should go with each CV you send out. A good cover letter
significantly increases the likelihood of getting an
interview.
The cover letter should be three paragraphs
and cover:
The reason for your application
Sell yourself by
linking your skills and strengths to the job
It should
request an interview or meeting
Interviews
Prepare thoroughly - about the job, the company,
your skills and achievement. Anticipate as many questions as possible and
have a reply already formed in your mind. The main areas that the interviewer
is looking at are: Can you do the job ? , Will you do the job ? ,
Will you fit in with the rest of team ? This is your opportunity to Sell
yourself as the solution to their problem.
