Rollerblade / Skateboard / BMX Parks - Many councils have created parks for local kids to have fun on roller blades, Skateboards and BMX bikes. This is partly to provide better facilities for teenagers but also to keep them out of shopping precincts and paved areas. The picture above is a typical outdoor Rollerblade / Skateboard / BMX park in Halton, near Runcorn, Merseyside. The facilities above are free. Occasionally events and demonstrations are organised, providing control, guidance, demonstations, medical cover, music and lots of FUN.
Silver Surfer - Recently a North West news program featured Jeff Dornan and showed that this fun activity has spread to some grey haired rebels. 70 year old Jeff - the Rollerblading Grandad from Ormskirk, Lancashire, is often spotted racing around the town on his rollerblades at midnight. It makes you wonder whether teenage trouble is actually down to silver surfers! Safety - As any parent can see, the potential for accidents is obvious and children need to have proper equipment. All parks will be subject to health and safety regulations and insurance company conditions. We recommend that every user wears appropriate safety equipment (such as knee and elbow pads, wrist and shin guards and helmets). Any sport that involves any form of risk may also require parental consent. However, as you can see from the photo above, reality is often very different from the ideal. Finding a Skateboard / BMX Park is quite difficult because most parks don't have a website and are only listed in local versions of the yellow pages if anything at all.
