Why not visit some of the film locations used in Harry Potter films?
Harry Potter has thousands of fans worldwide and many would like to visit the places where filming took place. Scenes from Harry Potter have been filmed all over the UK and it is possible to have a day trip to tour a few of the locations. However it must be remembered that some of the buildings used are actually composites made up from several different buildings. For example - Harry Catches the Hogwarts Express from Platform 9¾ by running into the wall. The actual scene was filmed on Platform 4 at Kings Cross Station, London. The exterior of the station is actually a different station - St. Pancras Station, London. Please be aware that it is not always possible to visit the places listed. Some places such as Australia House can only be visited on open days. I have provided a few details to help you get started. Please check local information before setting off. Glenfinnan Viaduct
The famous Glenfinnan Viaduct can be seen be seen in the flying car sequence in Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets. The Fort William to Mallaig railway line crosses the Glenfinnan valley via the spectacular Glenfinnan Viaduct. The viaduct is about 100 feet above the ground and spans 1000 feet across the valley using 21 huge arch supports. The Viaduct can be found approximately 20 miles west of Fort William. The Viaduct has also been used in the "Monarch of the Glen" and the film 'Ring of bright water". The line is no longer part of the British Rail network but it may be possible to take a train journey across the viaduct. Check local timetables. There are other local attractions that could be combined on a day trip to the Glenfinnan Viaduct. There are numerous walking and cycling routes, boat cruises on Loch Shiel, a station museum and a visitor centre ( open April - October 01397 722250 ).
West Highland Railway Line - Scotland This railway line was used for the train journey to Hogwarts. The West Highland Railway Line runs 42 miles from Fort William to Mallaig. The train passes through some of the scenery shown in the Harry Potter films, including Ben Nevis and the lochs and rugged countryside of Glen Nevis. Glen Nevis, Fort William - Scotland This area was used in the Quidditch scenes as the background landscape. Steall Falls, the waterfall at the base of the mountain, is where Harry's battle with the dragon takes place. Goathland Station, Goathland - North Yorkshire This was the location for Hogsmeade station. Pedestrian Bridge, York Station - York This was where Hagrid passes ticket for Platform 9¾ to Harry.
Alnwick Castle - Alnwick, Northumberland
(Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry)
Alnwick Castle has been used in a number of Film and TV programs including Harry Potter. It is probably best known as being the location of Hogwarts, the School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. The exterior of the castle is used for exterior Hogwarts shots, the Quidditch match and broomstick lesson is set within the ramparts. One of the most stunning scenes in the film sees Harry crash land a flying car in Alnwick Castle’s inner bailey. This Medieval Castle has also been used in the film Elizabeth and the Comedy series BlackAdder. The castle is open from March to October. Contact No. 01665 51077 Other locations used to create the Hogwarts interior are scattered across the UK like a jigsaw. Gloucester Cathedral - Gloucester (Hogwarts School, Corridors) The cathedrals magnificent cloisters were used as the the corridors of Hogwart’s School of Witchcraft and Wizardry in 'Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone' and 'Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets' and were the setting for ghost scenes. The talking pictures in the Sorcerer' stone, and the overflowing bathrooms in the Chamber of Secrets were also filmed here. Divinity School, Bodleian Library - Oxford (Hogwarts School, sanatorium scenes) The ceiling features images of beasts and biblical scenes and has been described as a "masterpiece of English Gothic architecture". Visitors are welcome during opening hours. Duke Humfrey's Library, Bodleian Library - Oxford (Hogwarts School, library scenes) This library has lots of old volumes and therefore it was perfect for giving a gothic feel to the library. The library can only be seen as part of a guided tour. Christ Church College, St Aldate's - Oxford (Hogwarts School, The Great Hall) The Great Hall and the stairs leading to hall were used as the Dining Hall in the Harry Potter films. Open every day except Christmas. Hall closed between 12pm and 2pm. Cathedral closes at 4:45pm. Admission £4/£3 when cathedral open, £3/£2 when closed. Harrow School - Harrow (Hogwarts School, Classroom) Professor Flitwick's classroom was used as a film location in 'Harry Potter And The Philosophers Stone'.
Lacock Abbey - Wiltshire (Hogwarts School, Various interior scenes)
Lacock Abbey is a 13th-century Abbey set in the picturesque medieval village of Lacock. Lacock Abbey retains its medieval cloisters as well as later Tudor features. The Abbey was the setting for various interior scenes at Hogwarts School. Telephone: 01249 730459 Durham Cathedral - Durham (Hogwarts School, Classroom) This 12th century cathedral provided one of the Hogwart's classrooms. A menagerie of animals including baboons and owls were brought in for the scenes shot at the Cathedral. Harry can be seen walking through the cloisters of the Cathedral with his owl, Hedwig. Although the exterior of McGonagall’s office was filmed at Alnwick Castle, her classroom is the Chapter House at Durham Cathedral. NB. Photographing the interior is permitted only with costly licenses that must be obtained in advance. Black Park, Iver - Buckinghamshire - The Forbidden Forest The 600 acre park was used for the movie's Forbidden Forest on the edge of Hogwarts, and out-of-bounds to the students. Hagrid's woodland home was set here too but has been demolished. Dursley's House - Berkshire Harry Potter lives in the Dursley's House at Number 4, Privet Drive, Little Whinging, Surrey. However, the house is just an ordinary house and can be found at 12 Picket Post Close, Martins Heron, Nr Bracknell, Berkshire. It is not possible to enter the house. ![]() Leadenhall Market, Lime Street, Broadgate - London It was used to represent the area of London near The Leaky Cauldron and Diagon Alley in the film Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone. The entrance to ‘The Leaky Cauldron’ was an empty shop, now an optician store – The Glass House, 42 Bullís Head Passage in Leadenhall Market in the City of London. London Zoo, Regent's Park - London Harry releases the snake from the Reptile House in London's Regent's Park Zoo. Australia House, Strand - London (Gringotts Bank interior) Gringotts Bank, the Wizards Bank run by goblins was filmed in a secure area of Australia House on the Strand. This fine marble interior is not usually open to the public apart from a once-a-year open day. Kings Cross Station - London This is the location of the Railway station with Platform 9 3/4 used in all the Harry Potter films. The actual platform used by the Hogwarts Express Steam Train was Platform 4. St. Pancras Railway Station - London This station was used for the exterior of King's Cross Station. |
