Motor Insurance notes

By Law you must have Motor Insurance on your car.

The legal minimum is Third party insurance. This type of policy is designed to protect other people, not yourself. It is the cheapest type of policy. If you are involved in an accident any damage caused to your vehicle will not be covered unless you can prove it was not your fault. In such circumstances it may be possible to claim off their insurance cover. This assumes that they are covered !

The next step up on the insurance ladder is Third Party, Fire and Theft. This adds a little bit more protection to cover theft of the car or if it catches fire.

Finally, there is Fully Comprehensive. This is the best type of car insurance but also the most expensive. If you drive an worthless old banger it might not be worth the cost.
The best ways to keep your insurance cost down.

  • Fit a good alarm and immobiliser
  • Keep the car in a garage overnight
  • Increase the voluntary excess - this is the amount you pay before the insurance company starts to pay out on a claim.
  • Don't allow others to drive the car

NB

Insurance is invalid if.......

  • you dont have a valid tax disc.
  • you dont have a current MOT on a car older than 3 years.
  • you fail to declare convictions, medical conditions or information that you have been asked to declare
Good drivers gain a 'no-claims' discount. This is added for each consecutive year of 'no-claims' up to a discount of 65%. This 'no-claims' discount can be protected with an additional premium.
